Auschwitz-Birkenau

The arrival of the first transport of Polish political prisoners to the town called Auschwitz on June 14, 1940 marks the beginning of the operation of the largest Nazi concentration camp established in German-occupied Poland during the World War II. The camp was expanded in the following years and was gradually transformed into the death factory. The camp was built in the Polish town incorporated within the Third Reich during the World War II - its pre-war and present name is Oswiecim.

Since 1942 Auschwitz had become the site of history's greatest genocide, the Holocaust of the Jewish people from by far all countries of Europe. It's estimated that more than 1,2 million of people were killed in the camp, 90 percent of them were Jews.

Presently, Auschwitz Museum and Memorial is well known all over the world. It is situated 60 kilometers from Krakow. A 3.5-hour tour of the museum includes visits to the original buildings and sites of KL Auschwitz I and KL Auschwitz II-Birkenau.

The visit is not recommended for adolescents under 15 on account of the camp's drastic exhibition and its history.
